Synopsis

The astronaut Debora floats in space. After a cosmic turbulence, she awakens in a domestic environment, unknown and transfigured. Here she finds two aliens, Mother and Grandmother. Intrigued, she approaches them in search of contact. The two aliens begin a telepathic tale about their lives, sexuality, and motherhood. Then the astronaut Debora leaves to continue her journey. Finally aware that, despite the profound differences, there is a bond that unites them. A bond that gives her back the sense of belonging to the other mothers in her family.

Director’s notes

The intent of the short documentary Maris B653 is to tell, through a experimental narration, a real, intimate and familiar experience, in which the socio-cultural crosses the lives of three generations of mothers.

“Maris” which in the Friulian language means mothers, is also the name to represent the North Star, guide and traveller reference. “653” are the kilometers that separate Rome, city in which I lived many years, and my home country in the north east of Italy, where still today live my mother and grandmother and where, a few years ago, my motherhood brought me back. In this reentry, I felt so out of place that I imagined myself as an astronaut exploring a new planet. During my adolescence my life was very conditioned by the religious dimension, because it determined what was right or wrong. What I tell is my fear, and that of many other women, to venture into life to discover something of themselves and own desires, culturally accustomed to an attitude of passive obedience and rules that should not be discussed.
